Post-Graduation Work Permit
The postgraduate work permit is the best program for those international students who want a valuable Canadian work experience after graduation. Also, this program helps foreign students to transition from temporary resident status to permanent residency in Canada. A post-graduation work permit can be granted for a maximum of three years. International students can only receive one Post-Graduation Work Permit from IRCC. a post-graduation work permit may be valid for up to three years, which depends on the duration of the study program in Canada completed by the applicant.
Eligibility for (PGWP) Post-graduation work permit
- Students must graduate from a full-time academic or professional program.
- Provide proof of completion of the study program
- Required a valid study permit
- Completed studies in Canada at least eight months long at an eligible Post-Secondary Institute
- Deadline to Apply: 180 Days after obtaining a transcript
How to apply for a Post-graduation work permit
The candidate must currently hold valid temporary status to obtain a post-graduation work permit. You must complete graduation from an eligible designated learning institution (DLI). Clear evidence is required to prove that you meet all of the following criteria.
You have completed a vocational, professional, or academic, training program at an eligible institution in Canada that is 8 months in duration and leads to a diploma or certificate.
You required a full-time student status in Canada during programs of study they have completed and submitted as part of their post-graduation work permit application. Exceptions can be made only for the following:
- Leave from studies
- Final academic session.
The candidate must have received an official letter from the eligible DLI confirming that he/she has met the requirements to complete the program of study. The transcript and official letter must be included in a post-graduation work permit application.
PGWP Application Timelines
Candidates can apply for the Post-Graduation Work Permit within 180 days of obtaining an official letter from the eligible DLI confirming that the requirements to complete the program of study have been met. If the study permit is going to expire before the marks have come in, candidates have two options:
- Apply for a visitor record to stay in Canada longer
- Leave Canada and apply for the PGWP
When applying, applicants must hold a valid study permit.
Eligible universities and colleges
The educational institution must be one of the following:
- A public post-secondary institution such as a college or trade school
- A private post-secondary institution that operates under the same rules and regulations as public institutions
- Canadian, private institution authorized by provincial statute to confer degrees, such as an associate, bachelor’s, master’s degree, etc.
